Real Estate was funny and fun, and I loved it! Mostly because I was pretty darn good at making it not only fun, but profitable for my buyers and sellers! One of my many Brokers said to me, “Brenda, you’ve got more guts than brains!” I said, “Thank you.” I knocked on more doors, got bitten by more ankle-biter dogs, and had more torn pants from those tiny dogs than most agents.
I say many brokers because many of them were hard to train. They had the demented idea that they were the boss. Wrong! The lowly agents produced the listings and wrote the sales! The Brokers sat in their plush offices and assumed they were in charge.
In my book, “Murder on Lake Haverly,” I allude to “The Bobbsey Twins. These two bitch women were real people; I changed their names, partly because they were real, and partly because after 50 years, I can’t remember their real names.
They were two women partners, and most people were scared to death of them. They each had rich new house-builder husbands, and they thought they were hot shit! I fell under their clutches once, and that was enough!
I got a sweet listing in the country, and I knew I was in for trouble when I presented it at our MLS meeting. The Bobbsey Twins had been trying to get the listing! I stopped at the house, and the owners took a liking to me, and the rest is history. The owners were really sweet and asked me not to allow ‘drive-bys’! Those are when buyers just drive by and sometimes annoy the sellers by stopping in front of the house and taking pictures. I stressed ‘no drive-bys’ at the meeting.
The next week, that “Nice” couple stormed into my office and demanded that we “Cancel the listing so they could list with a reputable company.” I would have said, “hell no!” but my Weiner Broker caved and gave it to them. To say I was pissed would be an understatement! He just gave away a listing and a possible sale.
At the next MLS meeting, they shouted, “How they saved their clients from the clutches of an unscrupulous realtor.
You may think I slunk away with my tail between my legs. NOT! For the next few weeks at every open house or MLS tour, I snagged their card and wrote my name in big letters on the back so they couldn’t miss it! When someone was way too unqualified to buy, I gave them one of those bitches’ cards and, with great enthusiasm, sold them on how wonderful those two bitches were. I told them that their husbands were builders, AND they would help them buy a brand-new house. I stressed that they should stick to them like glue.
At every MLS meeting, I sought them out and asked, “How’s your business going?” I hinted strongly that I was helping them get new business. I got many glaring looks, and most of my friends thought I should have sent dozens of “Drive-bys” by my former listing, but I did not. What I did was not bad business. I just gave them lots of business! And who knows, maybe they got lucky and made a sale or two! I was sure they got the message from the bitchy looks, and most of the agents hated them, and they all knew what I was doing, and I might have received some un-needed help!
